Description |
This course is designed for experienced literacy
educators who have little or no familiarity with the development
and/or delivery of literacy and basic skills programs in the workplace
environment. The course will help educators to gain an understanding
of:
• The complexities of the relationships between business, labour
and employees in the determination of workplace training needs;
• The key steps involved in the development and delivery of a workplace
literacy program that reflects the needs of the workplace;
• The critical role that evaluation plays in workplace programs. |

Outcome |
The course will help adult educators develop the
skills to be able to design and deliver a workplace literacy
program that reflects the needs of the workplace, and to work
collaboratively with key stakeholders: management, labour and
employees. |

| PREREQUISITE |
While there is no prerequisite for this course,
it is strongly recommended that you have at least two years experience
working with adult learners. |

| UNIT OUTCOMES |
UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO WORKPLACE
LITERACY
Successful completion of this unit will enable course participants
to demonstrate their understanding of the complexity of workplace
literacy. |
UNIT 2: UNDERSTANDING WORKPLACE LITERACY
Successful completion of this unit will enable course participants to demonstrate
their understanding of the perspectives of business, labour and the employee,
and the critical issues that influence the participation of each of these stakeholders,
in the development of workplace education programs. |
UNIT 3: PROGRAM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Successful completion of this unit will enable course participants to demonstrate
their understanding of what is involved in determining the educational needs
of a workplace and in developing a program that meets those needs. |
UNIT 4: PROGRAM DESIGN AND DELIVERY
Successful completion of this unit will enable course participants to demonstrate
their ability to apply the principles of adult learning to a workplace literacy
setting. |
| ASSIGNMENTS & LEARNING
ACTIVITIES |
| To complete Making it Work: Workplace
Basics for Adult Educators successfully you must submit for marking
four assignments and participate in a number of self-directed
learning activities. The value or weight assigned to each of
these activities will be set by the course instructor. Also,
the course facilitator or instructor and/or delivery agency may
have additional requirements. |
| MODULE DEMONSTRATION
ACTIVITY |
| In addition to the successful completion
of the learning activities for each unit, this course requires
you to complete a demonstration activity. The demonstration is
the method by which you will show that you have met the overall
course outcome. In other words, to show you have learned what
you set out to learn as a participant in this course. |
