| COURSE (Module) Description |
In Foundational Strategies both theories and practical knowledge about how adults learn to read, write, use numbers and become self-directed life-long learners are explored. Instructional strategies are situated within a goal-directed outcomes-based learning environment in which the learning needs of the individual learner are used as the basis for instruction. |
| COURSE (Module) Outcome |
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to encourage independence and critical thinking in the adult learner through the use of basic approaches to instruction. |

| UNIT ONE: EXPLORING FOUNDATIONAL STRATEGIES Successful completion of this unit will enable the participant to apply theoretical knowledge to learning situations to help learners achieve their learning goals. |

| UNIT TWO: SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING Successful completion of this unit will enable the participant to understand the role of self-directed learning in the development of literacy and numeracy skills, and use that understanding to create an environment that supports learner involvement. |

| UNIT THREE: SUPPORTING LEARNING WITH
COUNSELLING TECHNIQUES Successful completion of this unit will enable the participant to support learning through the use of counselling techniques that encourage and incorporate learner self-direction, self-awareness and personal decision-making. |
|
| UNIT FOUR: LEARNING DISABILITIES Successful completion of this unit will enable the participant to choose and modify instructional strategies that promote learning for adults with learning disabilities. |

| ASSIGNMENTS & LEARNING ACTIVITIES | |
| To successfully complete each unit of Foundational Strategies for Literacy and Numeracy Instruction course participants must complete a number of learning activities and a number of assignments. The value or weight assigned to each of these activities will be set by the course instructor. Also, the course facilitator or instructor and/or delivery agency may have additional requirements. | |
| MODULE DEMONSTRATION ACTIVITY | |
| In addition to the successful completion of the learning activities for each unit, this course requires you to complete a demonstration activity. The demonstration is the method by which you will show that you have met the overall course outcome. In other words, to show you have learned what you set out to learn as a participant in this course. | |
